Rekey or replace? The honest answer

Rekeying changes the pins inside the lock so a new key works and the old ones do not. The hardware on your door stays. It is the right call when the locks are decent and you simply do not know who has a key. Replacing is the right call when the lock is worn, when it is the cheap builder-grade set that came with the house, or when you want something the old lock cannot do, like a lever handle or a keypad.

The mid-century ranches in Townsite and Monte Vista often still carry original hardware from the 1950s and 60s. Some of it is beautiful and worth keeping. Some of it has a bolt that no longer throws all the way. We tell you which is which at the door, and the quote reflects it.

Moving in? Rekey first

Think of who has held a key to your new place: the builder's crews, the last owners and everyone they gave a copy to, the past tenants, a property manager, a dog walker, a house cleaner, the neighbor who watered the plants. None of them are your problem after a rekey. We recommend doing it before the moving truck leaves, and for the Camp Pendleton families landing in Vista during PCS season, we can usually schedule it for move-in day.

One key for every door

Most homes end up with a ring of keys: one for the front, one for the back slider lock, one for the garage entry, one for the gate, and one nobody can identify. If the locks are the same brand and keyway, we key them all to a single key. If they are not, we swap the odd cylinder so they can be. On the larger lots in Buena Creek and up in the Vista Foothills, that ring includes a driveway gate, a casita, a shop, and a well house, and consolidating it to one key is most of the value of the visit.

Landlords and property managers

A turnover rekey between tenants is the cheapest insurance a landlord buys. We rekey the unit, hand you the new keys with a receipt, and can key the unit to a master so you carry one key for every property you manage. Off-base rentals for military families turn over on the Corps' schedule, not yours, and we keep summer PCS weeks open for same-week turnovers. Multi-unit landlords: ask about keeping your properties on a keying record so the next turnover is a phone call, not a survey.

Deadbolts, handlesets, and smart locks

We install new deadbolts, including boring a fresh hole in a door that never had one, replace tired handlesets, and fit smart locks that keep a mechanical key as backup. On smart locks we pair the lock, test it from your phone, and prove the key override works before we leave, because the day the battery dies is the day you need it. If your HOA regulates front-door finishes, as most of Shadowridge does, tell us the allowed finish and we will match it.

Accessible hardware

Lever handles instead of knobs, deadbolts with a large thumb turn, and keys with a big-head grip make a real difference for aging-in-place and for the senior and affordable communities being built around town. We install lever hardware at unit doors and can key an entire building of levers to one key for the manager while each resident keeps their own.
